History and Information

Brief History

Since its creation in 1972, the basic task was to develop improved and diversified agricultural production systems by establishing rotations, for suitable soils, which integrate crops and pastures with the aim of increasing livestock and crop production.

Its land infrastructure was completed in 1973 with the incorporation of the “Glencoe” Experiment Unit in the Basaltic region (a property of the National Institute for Colonization (INC)) and with the purchase in 1975, of "La Magnolia" Experiment Unit on sandy soils.

Since 1989, it became part of the Instituto Nacional de Investigación Agropecuaria (INIA) as INIA-Tacuarembó Regional Direction.

Research and innovation for sustainable and inclusive development

- INIA Tacuarembó was created in 1972 as the Northern Experimental Station by a decree of the Executive Power as a component of the regionalization program of the “Alberto Boerger” Agricultural Research Center, belonging to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.

- The Northem Experimental Station starts with the objective of developing research activities and technical support in the area of Basaltic, Sandy and Northeast heterogeneous soils for the development of improved and diversified production systems that integrate crops and pastures for the increase of the production and productivity in these regions of Uruguay.

- 1973 saw the integration of “Glencoe” (1305 hectares) located on Basaltic soils of the department of Paysandú, as an Experimental Unit; and likewise in 1975, “La Magnolia” (613 hectares), located on Sandy soils in the department of Tacuarembó.

- Beginning with the formation of an interinstitutional working group between 1985 and 1989, the law creating INIA was approved. In this way, in 1989 the Northern Experimental Station became part of the National Institute for Agricultural Research carrying out activities in a geographic area of influence which, up to the present, mainly covers the complete departments of Artigas, Rivera and Tacuarembó and part of the departments of Cerro Largo, Durazno, Paysandú and Salto.

- At the present, INIA Tacuarembó Regional Direction is located on Km 386 of national road number 5, integrating a platform of 2018 hectares that were the basis for supporting research and multiple experimental working agreements with public and private institutions. Those are: Glencoe and La Magnolia Experimental Units and three Experimental Sites - Cinco Sauces, Paso Farías and Tambores - trying to approach the productive problems of the region
