Brief History


1970 – The “Estacion Experimental del Este” (Eastern Experiment Station) is created by means of a National Decree of September 17th 1970, as a result of the work and recommendations emerged from the Economic and Social Development Program of the Merin Lake Basin (a three-party Project by the Governments of Uruguay and Brazil together with UNDP/FAO) and priorities allocated by Uruguay’s Ministry for Livestock and Agriculture, to the solution of technological problems for the farming systems of the Eastern Region. The said Experiment Station initiates its activities within the administration of the “Centro de Investigaciones Agrícolas Alberto Boerger” (CIAAB).
1989 – National Act 16.065 creates the National Institute for Agricultural Research (Instituto Nacional de Investigacion Agropecuaria – INIA). Along with it “Estación Experimental del Este” becomes one of its regional centres.
1998 – A new building for INIA Treinta y Tres headquarters is inaugurated on Route 8 Km. 281.
