Intensification of cow-calf production:How does the system respond biologically to energy inputs in a long-term horizon?.

Abstract: In southern Brazil, beef cattle production systems generally rely on grazing on natural pastures. However, their forage production, and consequently metabolizable energy (ME) production, is seasonal and influenced by climatic events. Thus, there is a scientific and commercial interest in evaluating and understanding the biological impacts of intensification using pasture irrigation and the effects of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomena on the long term on the productivity of cow-calf systems.

ABSTRACT:An outbreak of cattle abortion associated with the consumption of Hesperocyparis (Cupressus) macrocarpa and Cupressus arizonica needles has been reported in Uruguay. Twenty-five of 125 pregnant heifers in late-term pregnancy aborted after being introduced into a paddock containing numerous H. macrocarpa, C. arizonica and Casuarina cunninghamiana trees. There were no significant macroscopic or histological findings in the two fetuses analyzed. Abortifacient labdane acids were detected in the needles of H. macrocarpa (1.68%, D.W.) and C.

ABSTRACT. Pathogenic Leptospira species represent a major concern for livestock but also for human health, as they cause zoonotic infections. Forty strains representing L. interrogans, L. borgpetersenii, and L. noguchii were isolated from naturally infected cattle in Uruguay. Here, we report the whole-genome sequences for these strains. © 2019 Nieves et al.

Development and number of generations of Haematobia irritans (Diptera:Muscidae) in bovine fecal masses in the semiarid region of Brazil.

ABSTRACT. The horn fly (Haematobia irritans) is particularly unique among the parasites that primarily affect Brazilian cattle farming. Appropriate control strategies fundamentally depend on epidemiological knowledge, which is particularly scarce in Northeastern Brazil. This study aimed to elucidate the ecology of the immature horn fly in the semiarid region of Brazil. Bovine fecal masses were collected and covered with emergence traps to collect the horn fly for sexing and counting. Weather records of the region were concurrently acquired. A total of 11,390H.

Predicting plant performance for the ecological restoration of grasslands:the role of regenerative traits.

Abstract:Active restoration of grassland ecosystems often requires the addition of species as seeds. However, knowledge of seed germination and initial performance of native species are still lacking in many regions, including the Brazilian grasslands. Regenerative traits (such as seed traits) have the potential to predict performance parameters related to the initial establishment of a species in a given environment.
