Drivers, process, and consequences of native grassland degradation:insights from a literature review and a survey in Río de la Plata grasslands.

ABSTRACT. Natural grasslands are being progressively degraded around the world due to human-induced action (e.g., overgrazing), but there is neither a widely accepted conceptual framework to approach degradation studies nor a clear definition of what ?grassland degradation? is. Most of the drivers, processes, and consequences related to grassland degradation are widespread and are usually separately quoted in the literature.

Abstract:Soils are a key issue in the management of global environmental changes and food supply. The goal of this work was to characterize the soil changes that were promoted by agriculture in Uruguay in the period 2002?2014. We analysed the association between pH, Ca2?, Mg 2?,K ?, Na ? and soil organic carbon (SOC) and its tendency through the years of soil analysis database 2002?2014 that belong to Experimental Station Alberto Boerger INIA La Estanzuela (Colonia, Uruguay).

Carbohydrate source offered in the prepartum diet did not affect postpartum metabolic status or milk yield in dairy cows.

Abstract:Increasing the provision of non- fibrou s carbohydrate s (NFC) during the prepartum period is a feeding strategy that has been recommended to facilitate the transition to the onset of lactation and improve dairy cow performance, but results ar e contradictory, probably because most studies have confounded the effect s of level and source of energy. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of the source of carbohydrate offered in the prepartum diet on postpartum cow performance.

ABSTRACT. Gala Fult is the first Uruguayan apple cultivar, originated by spontaneous somatic mutation of ?Royal Gala?, identified and evaluated by nurseryman Fernando Rocca and INASE. The fruits have a complete red-blushed skin without streaks and matures more precociously than the other ?Gala? clones, but with the same range of edaphoclimatic adaptation.

ABSTRACT:Sudden deaths after colostrum ingestion in kids and lambs born to mothers grazing in areas with Amorimia septentrionalis have been reported in the Brazilian northeastern semi-arid region, in Paraíba state. This study aimed to determine whether the sodium monofluoracetate (MF) contained in A. septentrionalis is eliminated in milk, causing the death of kids. After confirming gestation on the 25th day after mating, 26 goats were randomly distributed into three groups. In Group 1, eight goats received fresh leaves of A.

Entomopathogenic fungi naturally infecting the eucalypt bronze bug, Thaumastocoris peregrinus (Heteroptera:Thaumastocoridae), in Uruguay.

ABSTRACT. Thaumastocoris peregrinus Carpintero & Dellapé (Heteroptera:Thaumastocoridae) is a sap-sucking insect that feeds on leaves of Eucalyptus. In Uruguay, it was detected in 2008 causing significant economic losses in Eucalyptus plantations. At present, there is no efficient control for this pest; thus, the use of biological control agents seems to be an environmentally friendly alternative to reduce the damage caused by this insect. The aims of this study were to isolate and identify the species of entomopathogenic fungi that naturally infect T.

Sciomyzidae (Diptera) has been recorded in several countries of South America, but few species have been found in Uruguay. We report the first record of Sepedonea lindneri (Hendel, 1932) and Protodictya lilloana Steyskal, 1953 (Diptera, Sciomyzidae) from Uruguay. The specimens were collected in rice crops and in adjacent native vegetation with sweep net and vacuum sampler from December to March (2012?2015) in the Eastern region of the country. Photos of collection areas, habitus of adults and distribution map of the species are provided.
