ABSTRACT.- Context: The greenness index of the ear-leaf in maize (Zea mays L.) has been used to assess crop nitrogen (N) status, but it may not accurately predict yield responses to late N fertilization. Objective: This study aimed to i) analyze differences in the greenness index and N sufficiency index (NSI) across maize canopy leaf positions and their relationship with soil N availability, N nutrition index (NNI), and grain yield, and ii) evaluate the accuracy of NSI determined in different leaf positions in predicting the grain yield response to N fertilization at silking.

ABSTRACT.- In a beef cattle breeding farm located in northern Uruguay, an Aberdeen Angus calf was born with complex anomalies. The offspring was sired by one of the bulls of the farm. The calf died shortly after birth, displaying multiple malformations at external examination, including agenesis of the lumbar, sacral and coccygeal vertebrae and spinal cord and arthrogryposis of both pelvic limbs, characteristic of perosomus elumbis (PE).

RESUMEN.- El género de garrapatas Ixodes es considerado el más antiguo y diverso, con aproximadamente 279 especies. Dentro de este género, destacan las especies del complejo Ixodes ricinus que se han implicado en la transmisión de importantes enfermedades en humanos como la borreliosis de Lyme, anaplasmosis granulocítica humana y babesiosis. La babesiosis es causada por protozoarios del género Babesia y se considera una enfermedad zoonótica emergente a nivel mundial. El objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar molecularmente las especies de Babesia en garrapatas I.

RESUMEN.- En las diferentes etapas de la interacción patógeno-hospedador se activan genes de virulencia que le confieren al microorganismo la capacidad de adherirse, invadir tejidos, sobrevivir intracelularmente entre otras funciones. ABSTRACT.- Agriculture is transitioning towards more sustainable ways of producing food, fiber, and biofuels, with practices aimed at conserving soil resources by prolonging soil occupation with cash or cover crops and balancing the proportion of cereals and winter legumes when increasing the number of crops in the rotation. Likewise, closing nutrient biogeochemical cycles is critical, particularly for N, which requires adjusting fertilizer rates to avoid surplus or soil mining.
