Datathons:fostering equitability in data reuse in ecology.

ABSTRACT.- Approaches to rapidly collecting global biodiversity data are increasingly important, but biodiversity blind spots persist. We organized a three-day Datathon event to improve the openness of local biodiversity data and facilitate data reuse by local researchers. The first Datathon, organized among microbial ecologists in Uruguay and Argentina assembled the largest microbiome dataset in the region to date and formed collaborative consortia for microbiome data synthesis. © 2024 The Author(s)

The power of on-farm data for improved agronomy.

ABSTRACT.- Advances in technology and analytics to support data-driven agriculture has important implications for global food security and environmental sustainability. However, relatively few studies have investigated the potential to leverage the power of on-farm data for improved agronomy at scale using geospatial machine learning methods.

The implications of the intensification of a temperate rice-livestock rotation, in terms of nitrogen. P-926 [poster].

The Uruguayan rice-livestock system is one of the most productive worldwide, adding meagre amounts of N as fertiliser and reaching a very tight nitrogen (N) balance (N-BAL), low N surplus (N-SUR) and a high system N use efficiency (NUE), being a good example of a circular economy system.

Sustainability of water quality and quantity in Merín Lagoon (ML) basin has become an issue of concern, recognizing nutrient runoff from agricultural environment as one of the major sources influencing water impairment. The main area of rice cultivation in Uruguay is located in this watershed.

207-4. Rice rotations affect soil organic carbon sequestration and rice yield in a temperate region of South America. [Abstract]

Soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration is key in mitigating climate change. Rice systems rotated with perennial pastures are being intensified in South America to increase annual grain productivity, but the effects on SOC and rice yield remain poorly understood. These results highlight insights for the design of rice-based rotations that increase or sustain SOC and increase rice yield, helping simultaneously meet climate change and food production goals.
