Abstract:Context. Uninterrupted nutrient uptake and the use of bulls with high genetic merit for carcass traits may increase the likelihood of producing high-quality retail cuts for different markets. Aim. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the combined effects of level of nutrition during the 104-day post-weaning winter period (WADG; low-L:0.2 vs high-H:0.6 kg/calf per day) and level of expected progeny differences (EPD) for ribeye area (REA; high-H or average-Av) on carcass traits and retail cuts of Hereford steers. Methods.

Management Strategies for Lamb Production on Pasture-Based Systems in Subtropical Regions:A Review.

Sheep production on pasture plays an important role in subtropical climates around the world, with great economic and environmental relevance to those regions. However, this production is much lower than its true potential in subtropical regions, largely due to lack of knowledge of how to feed grazing lambs, and mitigate gastrointestinal parasite infections. Due to weather instability and the high growth rate of tropical grasses, it is difficult to adjust the quality and quantity of feed consumed by lambs.

ABSTRACT:Extensive livestock production is one of the activities that, without requiring habitat conversion, contributes to grassland conservation and human well-being. In Uruguay, approximately 60% of the land is covered by natural temperate grasslands, which are entirely devoted to extensive livestock production, mainly cattle and sheep.

Palicourea marcgravii (Rubiaceae) poisoning in cattle grazing in Brazil.

Abstract:Palicourea marcgravii is the most important poisonous plant of cattle in Brazil. It contains monofluoroacetic acid and causes sudden death associated with exercise. Herein, we describe the temporal and spatial distribution of the toxic disease. The survey was based on the epidemiological, clinical, and pathological data of the Setor de Anatomia Patológica (SAP) of the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRuralRJ) to report outbreaks of poisoning by P. marcgravii, from 1953 to 2018.

Unsupervised Methodology to In-Season Mapping of Summer Crops in Uruguay with Modis EVI's Temporal Series and Machine Learning. (Conference-paper)

ABSTRACT. This paper presents a new methodology for mapping summer crops in Uruguay, during the season, based on time-series analysis of the EVI vegetation index derived from the MODIS sensor. Time-series were processed with the k-means unsupervised machine learning algorithm. For this algorithm, the ideal number of clusters was estimated using the elbow method. Once the clusters were obtained, for each one, the average phenological signature was adjusted using a nonlinear smoothing spline regression technique.

Effect of the administration of Lactobacillus spp. strains on neonatal diarrhoea, immune parameters and pathogen abundance in pre-weaned calves.

Abstract: Neonatal calf diarrhoea is one of the challenges faced by intensive farming, and probiotics are considered a promising approach to improve calves' health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of potential probiotic lactobacilli on new-born dairy calves' growth, diarrhoea incidence, faecal score, cytokine expression in blood cells, immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels in plasma and faeces, and pathogen abundance in faeces. Two in vivo assays were conducted at the same farm in two annual calving seasons.

ABSTRACT:The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters and to identify genomic regions associated with the calving ease (CE) in precocious Nellore heifers. A total of 1,277 CE phenotypes were collected and scored into two categories:i- non assisted calving, categorized as success (1) and ii- assisted calving where heifers required any form of assistance or intervention to give birth, categorized as failure (2). A pedigree structure containing the identification of the animal's sire and dam was used, with the relationship matrix comprising a total of 6,511 animals.

ABSTRACT:Objective:Our objectives were to compare the effects of feeding eucalyptus bark or eucalyptus wood chips, both by-products from the pulp industry, on voluntary feed intake, animal performance, and physiological variables of heifers finished on high-concentrate diets. Materials and Methods:Forty-eight British-breed heifers (Angus, Hereford, and their crosses) that were 22 to 24 mo of age and had an initial BW of 355 ± 8 kg were used. Four heifers were allocated to each of the 12 pens (experimental units).
