ABSTRACT. In countries where livestock production based on native grasslands is an important economic activity, information on structural characteristics of forage is essential to support national policies and decisions at the farm level. Remote sensing is a good option for quantifying large areas in a relative short time, with low cost and with the possibility of analyzing annual evolution. This work aims at contributing to improve grazing management, by evaluating the ability of remote sensing information to estimate forage height, as an estimator of available biomass.

ABSTRACT. We report here the complete genome sequence of a Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) from Uruguay, sequenced by using Illumina and Sanger sequencing technology. This CTV DSST-17 genome clustered within genotype resistance breaking (RB) and presents two recombination events. © 2018 Benítez-Galeano et al.

Diversity of Uruguayan citrus tristeza virus populations segregated after single aphid transmission.

ABSTRACT. Prevalence of citrus tristeza virus (CTV) isolates causing severe stem pitting symptoms with a high diverse genetic composition represents a threat for citrus crops in Uruguay. This work aimed to characterize viral components of CTV populations segregated by single aphid (Toxoptera citricida) transmission (SAT). Thirty-nine SAT-derived sub-isolates were obtained from six CTV field isolates. Only eight were MCA13 non-reactive, and six of them, together with other three MCA13 reactive sub-isolates, were considered mild by the intensity of their reaction in ?Mexican?

Analytical methods for the routinely evaluation of pesticide residues in lemon fruits and by products.

ABSTRACT. Citrus fruits and their by-products such as concentrated juices and essential oils are important intermediate by-products in the food industry that can selectively accumulate plant protection agrochemicals employed in their production. They are very difcult matrices for pesticide residue analysis due their high number and concentration of phytochemicals that could hamper the determinations. The fruit processing leads to the concentration/dilution or elimination of some of these natural products that change totally the nature of the matrix where the pesticides partition unevenly.

Abstract: Pemphigus foliaceus (PF) is an autoimmune disease of the skin and is the most common form of pemphigus in domestic animals. This work reports a case of pemphigus foliaceus in a Santa Inês hair sheep. The ewe presented with multifocal bilateral crusted alopecic dermatitis affecting the chest, abdomen, and pelvic and thoracic limbs. Parakeratotic hyperkeratosis and acanthosis, in addition to subcorneal pustules, were observed histologically, and acantholytic cells and neutrophils were observed within the pustules.

Frequentist p-values for large-scale-single step genome-wide association, with an application to birth weight in American Angus cattle. (Short Communication)

ABSTRACT. Background:Single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction (SSGBLUP) is a comprehensive method for genomic prediction. Point estimates of marker effects from SSGBLUP are often used for genome-wide association studies (GWAS) without a formal framework of hypothesis testing. Our objective was to implement p-values for single-marker GWAS studies within the single-step GWAS (SSGWAS) framework by deriving computational algorithms and procedures, and by applying these to a large beef cattle population.

Diversity of wood-inhabiting Agaricomycotina on wood of different size classes in riparian forests of Uruguay.

Many Agaricomycotina species are saprobes, playing a fundamental role in nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems by decomposing wood. Little is known about factors affecting diversity of wood-inhabiting fungi in the neotropical, warm temperate native forests of Uruguay. Most of these native forests are riparian harboring about 300 tree species. In this study, we assessed the diversity of wood-inhabiting fungi on wood of different size classes in riparian forests of Uruguay. We recovered 186 species of Agaricomycotina, including 113 corticioid and 58 polyporoid taxa.

This study evaluated lairage time effects on carcass and meat quality traits of Hereford steers. Thirty Hereford steers fed on pasture were assigned to two treatments according to lairage time:3 h (n = 15) and 12 h (n = 15). Individual temperament was assessed using crush score and flight speed. pH decline, glycogen content, meat color, and shear force were measured. pH was not different between treatments at any time point, showing a normal decline rate.
