Entomopathogenic fungi naturally infecting the eucalypt bronze bug, Thaumastocoris peregrinus (Heteroptera: Thaumastocoridae), in Uruguay.

ABSTRACT. Thaumastocoris peregrinus Carpintero & Dellapé (Heteroptera: Thaumastocoridae) is a sap-sucking insect that feeds on leaves of Eucalyptus. In Uruguay, it was detected in 2008 causing significant economic losses in Eucalyptus plantations. At present, there is no efficient control for this pest; thus, the use of biological control agents seems to be an environmentally friendly alternative to reduce the damage caused by this insect. The aims of this study were to isolate and identify the species of entomopathogenic fungi that naturally infect T.

First records of Sepedonea lindneri (Hendel, 1932) and Protodictya lilloana Steyskal, 1953 (Diptera, Sciomyzidae) from Uruguay with an overview on their biology.

Sciomyzidae (Diptera) has been recorded in several countries of South America, but few species have been found in Uruguay. We report the first record of Sepedonea lindneri (Hendel, 1932) and Protodictya lilloana Steyskal, 1953 (Diptera, Sciomyzidae) from Uruguay. The specimens were collected in rice crops and in adjacent native vegetation with sweep net and vacuum sampler from December to March (2012?2015) in the Eastern region of the country. Photos of collection areas, habitus of adults and distribution map of the species are provided.

A loss-of-function allele of a TAC1-like gene (SlTAC1) located on tomato chromosome 10 is a candidate for the Erectoid leaf (Erl) mutation.

ABSTRACT. The genetic basis of an erectoid leaf phenotype was investigated in distinct tomato breeding populations, including one derived from Solanum lycopersicum ?LT05? (with the erectoid leaf phenotype and uniform ripening, genotype uu) × S. pimpinellifollium ?TO-937? (with the wild-type leaf phenotype and green fruit shoulder, genotype UU). The erectoid leaf phenotype was inherited as a semi-dominant trait and it co-segregated with the u allele of gene SlGLK2 (Solyc10g008160).

Water quality index for agricultural systems in Northwest Uruguay.

ABSTRACT. Agricultural systems have experienced rapid expansion and intensification in the last several decades. In Uruguay, since the beginning of 2000, the most common cropping systems have included soybeans. Currently, this crop is expanding towards lowlands traditionally occupied by rice in rotation with pastures. However, the environmental effects of agricultural intensification and diversification are not well known. Thus, some indices have been proposed to quantify the changes in agricultural production systems and assess water quality.

Late-gestation protein restriction negatively impacts muscle growth and glucose regulation in steer progeny.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to determine whether the amount of protein provided to cows during late gestation would affect postnatal growth and lead to changes on glucose and insulin concentrations. At 129 d of gestation, 10 mature multiparous Angus cows were stratified by BW and body condition score (BCS) and allotted to low protein level (LP, 6% crude protein [CP]) or high protein level (HP, 12% CP). After calving, cows were managed together on improved pastures which provided forage in excess of requirements until weaning.

Multilocus genotypes of the wheat leaf rust fungus Puccinia triticina in worldwide regions indicate past and current long distance migration.

Abstract:Many plant pathogenic fungi have a global distribution across diverse ecological zones and agricultural production systems. Puccinia triticina, the wheat leaf rust fungus, is a major pathogen in many wheat production areas of the world. The objective of this research was to determine the genetic relatedness of P. triticina in different worldwide regions. A total of 831 single uredinial isolates collected from 11 regions were characterized for multilocus genotype at 23 simple sequence repeat loci and for virulence to 20 lines of wheat with single genes for leaf rust resistance.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine whether crude protein intake during the last three months of gestation affects growth performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality of steer progeny. At 134 ± 14 d of gestation, 68 multiparous Angus cows were blocked by BW and expected calving date and randomly assigned to diets that contained either low or high dietary crude protein concentrations and were allotted in 12 pens per treatment. After calving, cows were managed together on improved pastures during lactation.

Probability of Rhipicephalus microplus introduction into farms by cattle movement using a Bayesian Belief Network.

Attempts to eliminate Rhipicephalus microplus from Uruguay have been unsuccessful, and, currently, the country is divided into two areas:a tick-free area and a tick-infested area. In the tick-infested area, different farms face different situations. Some farms are in regions where, due to environmental conditions or a lack of infrastructure, it is difficult to eliminate R. microplus, and the only option is to control it. In contrast, other farms can attempt complete removal. Before deciding whether a farmer should attempt to eliminate R.

Genetic variation in residual feed intake is associated with body composition, behavior, rumen, heat production, hematology, and immune competence traits in Angus cattle.

This experiment was to evaluate a suite of biological traits likely to be associated with genetic variation in residual feed intake (RFI) in Angus cattle. Twenty nine steers and 30 heifers bred to be divergent in postweaning RFI (RFIp) and that differed in midparent RFIp-EBV (RFIp-EBVmp) by more than 2 kg DMI/d were used in this study. A 1-unit (1 kg DM/d) decrease in RFIp-EBVmp was accompanied by a 0.08 kg (SE = 0.03; P
