ABSTRACT. We have explored the fungal diversity in asymptomatic twigs of apple, peach, pear and blueberry trees, with the objective of discerning between true endophytes and latent pathogens. Several fungal genera containing known bark pathogens were found. Seven Diaporthe species?D. oxe, D. infecunda, D. serafiniae, D. phaseolorum, D. terebinthifolii, D. foeniculina and D. brasiliensis?were identified, along with Botryosphaeria dothidea, Neofusicoccum parvum, Neofusicoccum australe, Cytospora sp., Cytospora acaciae and Pestalotiopsis spp.

Abstract: In the world, Kalanchoe species are primarily ornamentals and houseplants, but some have escaped cultivation and can be found in the field. In Latin America, there are no reports of spontaneous poisoning by Kalanchoe species in animals. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological, clinical, and pathological aspects of an outbreak of poisoning by Kalanchoe blossfeldiana in cattle in the semiarid region of Pernambuco, Brazil. Epidemiological and clinical data were obtained from the owner and veterinarian during technical visits.

Emisión de óxido nitroso, nitrificación, desnitrificación y mineralización de nitrógeno durante el cultivo del arroz en 2 suelos de Uruguay = Nitrous oxide emission, nitrification, denitrification and nitrogen mineralization during rice growing season in 2 soils from Uruguay.

Abstract Microbial processes such as mineralization, nitrification and denitrification regulate nitrogen dynamics in the soil. The last two processes may produce nitrous oxide (N2O). In this work N2O fluxes were quantified at four moments of the rice cycle, sowing, tillering, panicle initiation and maturity, in two sites that differed mainly in their soil organic matter (OM) content, Salto (higher OM) and Treinta y Tres. Potential net N mineralization, ammonium oxidation and denitrification as well as the most probable numbers (MPN) of ammonia oxidizers and denitrifiers were determined.

The rice crop and associated ecosystems constitute a rich mosaic of habitats that preserve a rich biological diversity. Spiders are an abundant and successful group of natural predators that are considered efficient in the biocontrol of the major insect pests in agroecosystems. Spider diversity in different stages of the rice crop growth from eastern Uruguay was analysed. Field study was developed on six rice farms with rotation system with pasture, installed during intercropping stage as cover crop.

ABSTRACT. Protothecosis is a rare disease caused by environmental algae of the genus Prototheca. These are saprophytic, non-photosynthetic, aerobic, colorless algae that belong to the Chlorellaceae family. Seven different species have been described. Prototheca zopfii genotype 2 and P. wickerhamii are most commonly involved in pathogenic infections in humans and animals. The objective of this work is to describe, for the first time, a case of protothecosis caused by P. zopfii genotype 1 in a dog.

ABSTRACT: The basic chemical composition and the fatty acid (FA) profile of Uruguayan Colonia cheese, consumed in the Mercosur region, were determined. 24 cheeses from different dairy farms:10 elaborated in autumn and 14 in spring, were analyzed. Those cheeses are made from cow´s milk, whose diet was composed of 50% pasture system, 25% concentrate, and 25% silage reserves. The cheese making and ripening time were similar. Seasonal differences emerged in the profiles of saturated FA (SFA), unsaturated FA (UFA) and polyunsaturated FA (PUFA).

Abstract Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay, founded by Spaniards in the 18th century, and Colonia del Sacramento, established by the Portuguese in the 17th century, are sources of olive diversity. A study and analysis of this unexplored heritage was initiated 10 years ago, using morphological and molecular tools. After a primary geographical and historical survey, 360 Olea europaea fruit and leaf samples were collected. After morphological analysis of 11 stone characters, the samples could not be matched with any cultivars in databases from Mediterranean countries.

Abstract. This article presents an economic evaluation of Uruguay?s beef industry competitiveness to quantify the effects of public policies (taxes, subsidies, social charges) on the various links constituting the beef export chain and estimate the impact of transfers of resources between the beef industry and other sectors of the economy. The Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) techniques were employed to quantify the effects of public policies on the competitiveness of Uruguay?s beef industry.

Abstracts: In the semiarid region of northeastern Brazil, Tephrosia cinerea causes periacinar hepatic fibrosis in sheep with severe ascites and, occasionally, nervous signs. Sixteen sheep from six outbreaks of T. cinerea poisoning were studied. All sheep had histologic lesion of periacinar fibrosis and six showed, in the brain, vacuolization (spongy degeneration) of the white matter and junction between grey and white matter and presence of Alzheimer type II astrocytes in the grey matter.

Incidência de Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bigemina e Babesia bovis em bezerros no semiárido paraibano. (Incidence of Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis among calves in the semiarid region of Paraiba, Brazil).
