ABSTRACT. Agricultural production systems confront the challenge of achieving sustainable intensification, i.e., increase productivity without affecting the environment in ways that could compromise the development of future generations. In many developing countries the availability of information for assisting public and private stakeholders to achieve this goal is often not a critical limitation. Moving the relevant information from research institutes to extension agents, policy makers, agribusinesses and farmers has been a more frequent limitation.

RESUMEN. Innovar se ha convertido en una necesidad de supervivencia. Es y será un factor clave de competitividad para las empresas, las regiones y la economía de los países. Sin embargo, hasta el momento, las políticas y estrategias de innovación se han focalizado en la promoción de la innovación y en la formación de profesionales. Esta estrategia se ha demostrado necesaria inicialmente pero insuficiente para responder con éxito a todos los nuevos retos y necesidades que presenta la economía del conocimiento.

Abstract:Soil erosion byrainfall is a process that demands management, both for the prevention of excessive soil erosion and for the protection of the quality of freshwater bodies. Erosion coefficients (K-factors) of the universal soil loss equation (USLE)/revised USLE (RUSLE) model were assigned to 99 mapped Uruguayan soil types at 1:1,000,000 scale. This work developed a linear mixed model (LMM) with 79 soils with assigned K-factors, in which the following variables were considered:soil taxonomy, chemical composition, and parent material.

Abstract Beef production with Holstein male calves is becoming more intensive in Uruguay. Some of the new systems with confined animals could improve productivity but also could compromise animal welfare. The aim of this study was to compare animal welfare, stress evidence and productivity of castrated young males reared in three different productive systems. The traditional pastoral system (T3) was compared with, a confined fattening system (T1) and an alternative one with confinement and six hours diary access to pastures (T2).

Resumo: O objetivo do presente trabalho foi comparar diferentes condições de luz e temperatura para o estabelecimento do teste de germinação de sementes de amendoim forrageiro (Arachis pintoi Krapov. & W.C. Gregory), visando uma primeira aproximação à padronização do teste. Os testes de germinação foram conduzidos com 200 sementes (quatro repetições de 50 sementes), utilizando-se como substrato rolo de papel toalha. O experimento foi conduzido em duas etapas. Na primeira, as temperaturas utilizadas foram 25ºC, 30ºC, 35ºC, 25-30ºC, 25-35ºC e 30-35ºC, com e sem luz.

Antimicrobial resistance has become an imminent concern for public health. As methods for detection and characterization of antimicrobial resistance move from targeted culture and polymerase chain reaction to high throughput metagenomics, appropriate resources for the analysis of large-scale data are required. Currently, antimicrobial resistance databases are tailored to smaller-scale, functional profiling of genes using highly descriptive annotations.
