Application of a triple 15N tracing technique to elucidate N transformations in a UK grassland soil.

Abstract:To identify the production and consumption pathways and temporal dynamics of N2O emitted from soil, this study uses 15N-labelled substrate-N to quantify the underlying gross N transformation rates using the Ntrace analysis tool and link them to N-emissions. In three experiments twelve soil cores each were incubated in a lab incubation system to measure gaseous emissions, while parallel incubations under the same conditions were set up for destructive soil sampling at 7 time points.
Transferable Resistance to Highest Priority Critically Important Antibiotics for Human Health in Escherichia coli Strains Obtained From Livestock Feces in Uruguay. (Brief Research Report Article).

Abstract:The aim of this work was to detect Escherichia coli isolates displaying resistance to oxyimino-cephalosporins, quinolones, and colistin in feces from livestock in Uruguay. During 2016?2019, fecal samples from 132 broiler and layer chicken flocks, 100 calves, and 50 pigs, were studied in Uruguay. Samples were cultured on MacConkey Agar plates supplemented with ciprofloxacin, ceftriaxone, or colistin. E. coli isolates were identified by mass spectrometry and antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed by disk diffusion agar method and colistin agar test.
Ovulation and ovulation rate in ewes under grazing conditions:factors affecting the response to short-term supplementation.

Abstract: The relationships between ovulation rate and nutrition remain confused, probably because of uncontrolled variation in experimental conditions. To help resolve the problem, we analyzed data from 20 experiments conducted between 2002 and 2016, in Uruguay with grazing ewes. All experiments were carried out by a single laboratory under comparable conditions of experimental design and measured variables. The studies used a total of 3?720 ewes, of purebred Corriedale, Polwarth, or East Friesian x Polwarth genotypes.

One health:considerations in the International Year of Plant Health. [Una sola salud:consideraciones en el Año Internacional de la Salud Vegetal].

The concept of "one health" is gaining strength at a global scale. The term summarizes a notion that has been known for more than a century:human and animal health are interdependent and linked to the ecosystems in which they coexist. In the International Year of Plant Health (2020), it is crucial that the agricultural sciences call attention for the need to consider the health of plants and their microbiome as a whole within the ?one health? concept, closely linked to the health of the soil, the environment, animals and humans.

Microsatellite genotyping reveals extensive genetic diversity in bovine Neospora caninum from the humid Pampa region in Argentina.

Abstract:Neospora caninum is an apicomplexan protozoan and a major cause of abortion in cattle worldwide. In the Argentinian Humid Pampa, bovine neosporosis causes severe economic losses. Despite this, information on the genetic structure of N. caninum in this region is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to genetically characterize N. caninum isolates associated with bovine abortion in the Humid Pampa region.
Relevant factors in the eutrophication of the Uruguay River and the Río Negro.

Abstract:In recent decades, there has been increasing eutrophication of rivers and lagoons in Uruguay and solutions leading to water purification are being sought. The growing pollution has been attributed to nitrogen and phosphorus compounds exported from the river basins with intensification of agricultural production and the absence of tertiary treatment for urban and industrial effluents. Although nitrogen and phosphorus are relevant to eutrophication, there are also other factors that can promote eutrophication and algal blooms.
EMAG - National model for evaluating environmental impacts of cattle production systems in Uruguay. [EMAG - Modelo nacional para evaluar impactos ambientales de sistemas de producción ganadera en Uruguay]. [EMAG - Modelo nacional de evaluação de impactos ambientais dos sistemas de produção pecuária no Uruguai].

ABSTRACT. Cattle and sheep systems in Uruguay and worldwide are challenged to reduce their environmental footprint while increasing efficiency and production. To achieve this challenge, user-friendly tools are needed that can translate research findings into practical information that could improve decision making by farmers and advise different stakeholders. Despite this, there are a limited number of applied environmental models in other countries and they are typically based on productive, high-quality pasture/crop-feed systems with relatively high inputs.
