It is well known that the eating quality of lamb is highly affected by feeding systems. The aim of this study was to ascertain acceptability of Uruguayan lamb meat from animals fed on different diets (only pasture-D1, only concentrate-D4 and two combinations of both systems-D3 and D4) by consumers from different European countries (Spain, Germany, United Kingdom and France). One hundred and twenty castrated Corriedale lambs were reared to 28.2 ± 0.8 kg live weight and then thirty lambs were allocated to each diet and reared to 40 kg live weight.

Comparison between the reproductive performance of ewe hoggets and mature ewes following a progesterone-based oestrus synchronization protocol.

ABSTRACT. Two experiments were conducted to compare the reproductive performance of ewe hoggets and mature ewes. All ewes were synchronized by an intravaginal progesterone-releasing device and bred together over a 5-day period. In Experiment 1, of those joined with the ram, more mature ewes ovulated (99% vs 68%; P

Pathotype and genetic shifts in a population of Phytophthora sojae under soybean cultivar rotation.

ABSTRACT. Changes in pathotype structure of Phytophthora sojae populations have been attributed to deployment of race-specific resistant Rps genes in soybean that have been incorporated into commercial cultivars to reduce losses due to Phytophthora root and stem rot. To test this hypothesis, a cultivar rotation study was established from 2007 through 2010 in microplots at a site in Iowa with no history of soybean cultivation. All microplots were inoculated with P. sojae isolate PR1, race 1 (vir 7) prior to planting in year 1. Six rotations were tested:(i) continuous planting of a P.

ABSTRACT. The syringyl/guaiacyl (S/G) ratio of Eucalyputs grandis lignin was determined and its relation with kraft pulping parameters was studied. Twenty one wood samples obtained from 10-year-old trees grown in the same place were analyzed using Py-GC-MS to determine the syringyl/guaiacyl (S/G) ratio. The samples were pulped to the same final lignin content (Kappa number 18) obtaining pulp yields between 48.8% and 54.3%. Relationships were observed between pulp yield and S/G ratio (r = 0.51) also between alkali charge used in pulping and S/G ratio (r = -0.60). © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

Leaf rust resistance in selected late maturity, common wheat cultivars from Uruguay.

ABSTRACT. Leaf rust (caused by Puccinia triticina) is one of the most important diseases of wheat in Uruguay, and breeding for resistance to this disease is a priority for the INIA wheat program. Knowledge of the effective resistance genes present in the germplasm is relevant when selecting for effective and more durable resistance. The leaf rust resistance present in six adapted wheat cultivars that are parents of many advanced lines was studied. Races of P.

Early reproductive losses are a major factor contributing to the poor reproductive performance of Merino ewe lambs mated at 8-10 months of age.

ABSTRACT. The reproductive performance of Merino ewe lambs is lower than that achieved by mature ewes and is highly variable. It is likely that embryo loss represents a major source of reproductive wastage in Merino ewe lambs, but to our knowledge no studies have attempted to determine when the major reproductive losses occur or identify predisposing factors that are likely to lead to high rates of pregnancy failures in ewe lambs.
