ABSTRACT:Enzootic calcinosis (EC), is a chronic disease, caused by toxic plants, which has mainly affected ruminants for more than 100 years. It is characterized by a soft tissue calcification, hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypoparathiroidism, hypercalcitoninism, osteonecrosis, and osteopetrosis. The toxic compound reported in some of these plants are 1,25(OH)2D3 glycosides. Characterization of calcinogenic principles were performed with Solanum glaucophyllum, Trisetum flavescens, Cestrum diurnum, and Stenotaphrum secundatum.

ABSTRACT. Eucalyptus grandis and E. dunnii have high productive potential in the South of Brazil, Uruguay, and central Argentina. This is based on the similarity of the climate and soil of these areas, which form an eco-region called Campos. However, previous results show that these species have dierences in their distribution caused by the prioritization of Uruguayan soils for forestry, explained by the particular conditions of each site.

ABSTRACT. Rooting is the mechanism by which roots explore soil resources to nourish and anchor the plant to the ground. In vegetable crops, nitrogen (N) application exceeds crop demand due to over fertilization, thereby contributing to N losses through nitrate (NO3−) leaching. To improve N fertilization, knowledge of the response of rooting behaviour and root dynamics to N fertilization will be very useful.

Abstract BACKGROUND:Bias has been reported in genetic or genomic evaluations of several species. Common biases are systematic differences between averages of estimated and true breeding values, and their over- or under-dispersion. In addition, comparing accuracies of pedigree versus genomic predictions is a difficult task. This work proposes to analyse biases and accuracies in the genetic evaluation of milk yield in Manech Tête Rousse dairy sheep, over several years, by testing five models and using the estimators of the linear regression method.

Abstract:A case series study was conducted to determine the frequency of causes of abortion in dairy cattle in Uruguay. The sample size of 102 cases was composed of 53 fetuses, 35 fetuses with placentas, and 14 placentas without an associated fetus. All cases underwent gross and microscopic pathologic examinations as well as microbiological and serological testing. The etiology was determined in 54 (53%) of cases, 51 of which were caused by infectious agents.

ABSTRACT:Despite the importance of dairy farming in Uruguay,little information on dairy systems in this country is available in the scientific literature, and management practices that influence calf welfare at the herd level have not been explored. The aims of this study were to (1) describe the prepartum and calf-rearing systems, as well as the management practices that may influence calf welfare in pastured dairy herds in Uruguay, (2) estimate the annual calf mortality risk from birth to weaning, and (3) identify the primary clinical disease syndromes shown by the calves before death.

Abstract: Most wheat cultivars planted worldwide are susceptible to the stem rust Ug99 race group. To prepare for the potential spread of these races into South America, we aimed to identify genomic regions responsible for resistance to Ug99 race group in germplasm adapted to South America. Two RIL populations from a cross between a stem rust susceptible parent ?Baguette 13? and resistant local parents ?INIA Tero? and ?BR23//CEP19/PF85490? were developed. Phenotypical evaluation was completed at the seedling stage in Uruguay and under field conditions in Uruguay and Kenya.
