ABSTRACT. This work studies the effects of forestation on forage mass and its chemical composition, as well as mean air temperature and their impact on beef cattle performance and grazing behaviour when compared to a natural grassland system. The systems comprised 100% natural grassland from the Campos biome (NG) and forested land (FL) 60% 6 y.o. Pinus taeda (500 trees per hectare) and 40% of natural grassland. We found that the crude protein composition of the pasture growing under the trees was higher, while mean air temperature was lower during the hot season.

Evaluación de la aceptación de distintas presentaciones de un contraceptivo oral en palomas torcazas. [Evaluation of different presentation´s acceptance of an oral contraceptive in eared doves].

Spatio-temporal modeling and competition dynamics in forest tillage experiments on early growth of Eucalyptus grandis L.

Forest tillage experiments regularly use long-term evaluations of large plots creating temporal and/or spatial correlations among observations. Not modeling these correlations could compromise treatment comparisons. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of modeling spatio-temporal (ST) variability in forest tillage experiments. We used different strategies that incorporate spatial and/or temporal correlations in the evaluation of tillage intensity effect in initial Eucalyptus growth as well as evaluate the effect of intraplot mortality and competition dynamics.

Is it possible to accurately estimate lactation curve parameters in extensive beef production systems?

Objective The objective was to characterize the lactation curve applying 3 different models using multiparous grazing beef cows. Materials and Methods Milk production data from 99 British crossbred multiparous cows grazing native pastures were analyzed. Lactation was assessed 15 d postpartum and then monthly until weaning (180 d postpartum) using a milking machine after an oxytocin injection. Total milk production and lactation curve were characterized using Wood (WD) and Wilmink (WIL) models, and both were compared with spline functions.

Application of linked and unlinked co transformation to generate triple stack, marker free, transgenic white clover (Trifolium repens L.).

ABSTRACT. Both linked and un-linked co-transformation can be used to overcome limitations of methods, such as re-transformation or sexual crossing of transgenic plants, to enable transfer of multiple genes to a single plant. Un-linked co-transformation can also facilitate the production of selectable marker-free transgenic plants.

Abstract: Uruguay is one of the main exporters of beef and dairy products, and cattle production is one of the main economic sectors in this country. Rotavirus A (RVA) is the main pathogen associated with neonatal calf diarrhea (NCD), a syndrome that leads to significant economic losses to the livestock industry. The aims of this study are to determine the frequency of RVA infections, and to analyze the genetic diversity of RVA strains in calves in Uruguay. A total of 833 samples from dairy and beef calves were analyzed through RT-qPCR and sequencing.

Shifting to foot-and-mouth disease-free status without vaccination:Application of the PROMETHEE method to assist in the development of a foot-and-mouth national program in Uruguay.

Abstract: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is highly contagious, and the introduction of FMD virus in countries free of the disease can result in large epidemics, similar to those observed in the United Kingdom, Japan, and Uruguay. Many countries or regions of South America are recognized as ?FMD-free with vaccination? or ?FMD-free without vaccination.? Uruguay has been certified as FMD-free with vaccination, and the transition to the status of FMD-free without vaccination has been discussed among the stakeholders of the Ministry of Livestock Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP in Spanish).

Single-step genomic evaluations from theory to practice:using snp chips and sequence data in blupf90.

ABSTRACT. Single-step genomic evaluation became a standard procedure in livestock breeding, and the main reason is the ability to combine all pedigree, phenotypes, and genotypes available into one single evaluation, without the need of post-analysis processing. Therefore, the incorporation of data on genotyped and non-genotyped animals in this method is straightforward. Since 2009, two main implementations of single-step were proposed.
