ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to report the clinical and pathological aspects of an outbreak of poisoning by the ingestion of Ricinus communis leaves in a herd of goats at Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. Within 3-5 hours after ingesting the sprouts and young shrubs of the plant, twenty Toggenburg female goats and two adults crossbred wethers presented acute neurological clinical signs, which were initially characterized by decreased locomotor activity that later evolved to severe ataxia, depression, incoordination and staggering gait.

ABSTRACT. The purpose of this paper is to provide an idea about the market shares of important beef producers, to analyse the competitive situation of beef production on the farm-level and to assess the potential of beef production in a worldwide context. The global players in beef production are North America, Brazil, Argentina, Australia and the EU-25. In value-terms, the main exporters are North America, Australia, Brazil and Argentina. Main importers are again North America, Japan and the Far East.

ABSTRACT. In many developing countries, the potential benefits from adopting a transgenic variety developed by a multinational corporation are limited by the crop's small production base. This paper presents an ex-ante evaluation of the economic impact of herbicide resistant transgenic rice in a small developing country, Uruguay. To fully account for the multinational's market power, the firm's seed markup is assumed to affect the adoption rate for the variety.

ABSTRACT. The South American Tortricid Moth (Meyrick, 1909) (Lepidoptera:Tortricidae) is often found damaging vineyards and other temperate fruit orchards, in Southern Brazil and Uruguay. This work was conducted to study the seasonal occurrence of A. sphaleropa adults in vineyards using sexual synthetic pheromone. Based on weekly evaluation of A.

ABSTRACT. Plants were propagated by fruits and cuttings. Cuttings were rooted in two seasons:autumn (May 19, 1992), in a field nursery under plastic cover, and spring (September 14, 1992) in plastic containers under shade. Seeds were sown in a field nursery under plastic cover on June 8, 1992. Plants were taken to the field on November 25, 1992, planted at a spacing of 30 x 40 cm. For the three treatments, the mortality of plants after transplanting was 42, 4 and 46% respectively. Within each treatment, plants were harvested on February 5, 1993, November 12, 1993 and November 3, 1994.

Solving the controversy of healthier organic fruit:Leaf wounding triggers distant gene expression response of polyphenol biosynthesis in strawberry fruit (Fragaria x ananassa).

ABSTRACT. The claim that organic agriculture produces higher levels of phytochemicals has been controversial for decades. Using strawberries as a model crop in field conditions, a preharvest leaf wounding stress was applied to study the production of phytochemicals in fruits. As a result phenolic compounds (PCs) and total soluble sugars increased significantly, where specific phenylpropanoids showed increment up to 137% and several genes related to PCs biosynthesis and sugar transport were overexpressed.
