ABSTRACT. We examined the effect of lipid content in the diet on the transcriptome of the Longissimus dorsi muscle in pigs. Our objective was to examine changes at the molecular level affecting economically relevant meat quality characteristics such as intramuscular fat deposition and fatty acid profile. The treatments consisted of isoproteic and isoenergetic diets with differing lipid contents due to addition of rice bran. The control diet (T0) was a normal basic diet and the test diet (T15) had 15% rice bran.

ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to evaluate the reproduction of Meloidogyne graminicola in 22 cultivars of rice used in the southern region of Brazil according to the irrigation management. The design was completely randomized in a factorial scheme, being the factor A:rice cultivars and factor B:irrigation management (dry and flooded). The rice cultivars were kept individually in pot with sterilized substrate and inoculated with 5,000 eggs and juveniles (second stage ? J2) of the nematode. Plants to rice cultivate BRS IRGA 410 was inoculated with M.

ABSTRACT. Medicinal plants Scoparia dulcis showing symptoms caused by rootknot nematodes were detected in the municipality of Cachoeira do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Based on the morphological, esterase phenotypes, and molecular analyses of the mitochondrial DNA region between the cytochome oxidase subunit II and 16S rRNA genes (mtDNA) and species-specific sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR), the causal agent of the observed symptoms was identified as Meloidogyne javanica. Pathogenicity was confirmed by fulfilling a modified version of Koch?s postulates.

ABSTRACT. The frequency of species of root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) was evaluated in weeds collected in different fallow farms in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In the samples where the nematode was found, the species of the root-knot nematode was identified by electrophoresis using the isozyme esterase. They were obtained from weeds belonging to 24 weed species from 13 different botanical families:Amaranthaceae, Asteraceae, Commelinaceae, Convovulaceae, Cyperaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Lamiaceae, Malvaceae, Oxalidaceae, Poaceae, Portulacaceae, Solanaceae, Verbenaceae.

ABSTRACT. Background:Pythiosis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by the oomycete Pythium insidiosum. This disease has been reported in several species, but most cases occur in horses. In this species, the cutaneous form is more prevalent, with occasional involvement of adjacent lymph nodes and bone tissue. The involvement of the mammary glands was not properly characterized. Therefore, the aim of this study is to describe cases of pythiosis with the involvement of the mammary glands in mares.

Equine poisoning by coffee husk (Coffea canephora) in northern Espírito Santo, Brazil. (Case report).

ABSTRACT. Background:Brazil is the largest coffee (Coffea canephora and Coffea arabica) producer in the world, and Espírito Santo state is the second largest national producer of this commodity. Caffeine poisoning has been described in several animal and human species and is generally associated with accidental and/or intentional ingestion of caffeine-containing products. In horses, there are few reports in the literature about coffee poisoning, and most animals show clinical signs of excitability, involuntary muscle tremors, and chewing movements.

Integrating Y-chromosome, mitochondrial, and autosomal data to analyze the origin of pig breeds.

ABSTRACT. We have investigated the origin of swine breeds through the joint analysis of mitochondrial, microsatellite, and Y-chromosome polymorphisms in a sample of pigs and wild boars with a worldwide distribution. Genetic differentiation between pigs and wild boars was remarkably weak, likely as a consequence of a sustained gene flow between both populations.

Mechanistic dose-response modelling of animal challenge data shows that intact skin is a crucial barrier to leptospiral infection.

ABSTRACT. Leptospirosis is a widespread and potentially life-threatening zoonotic disease caused by spirochaetes of the genus Leptospira. Humans become infected primarily via contact with environmental reservoirs contaminated by the urine of shedding mammalian hosts. Populations in high transmission settings, such as urban slums and subsistence farming communities, are exposed to low doses of Leptospira on a daily basis. Under these conditions, numerous factors determine whether infection occurs, including the route of exposure and inoculum dose.
