In 1997, an integrated plant breeding program was initiated at the National Agricultural Research Institute (INIA) Uruguay, to develop forage legumes and root nodule bacteria which were able to be productive in co-existence with the native (grass-dominant) vegetation when grazed by cattle and sheep.

ABSTRACT. Three outbreaks of poisoning by Portulaca oleracea were reported in sheep and goats in Northeast Brazil. In the first outbreak, 8 out of 20 sheep were affected and later died. In the second outbreak, three goats and one sheep died out of a flock of 30 animals that included both species. In the third outbreak, two out of 19 sheep were affected, and they recovered after a treatment of 2% methylene blue at a dose of 4 mg/kg body weight. In the first and second outbreaks, the animals ingested P. oleracea after it was cut and offered in feeders.

Refeeding ewe's ad libitum after energy restriction during mid-pregnancy does not affect lamb feed conversion ratio, animal performance and meat quality.

The aim of the study was to evaluate maternal energy restriction in ewes from day 48 to 106 of gestation on pre- and post-weaning lambs' performance, carcass and meat quality when their dams were fed ad libitum after the restriction period. Ewes bearing single or twin lambs were assigned to two dietary treatments from day 48 to day 106 of gestation:restricted (R; n = 60) at 60% of their metabolizable energy (ME) requirements, or non-restricted (NR; n = 54) at 100% of their ME requirements. After the restriction period ewes grazed all together ad libitum until weaning.

ABSTRACT. The goal of our study was to improve 'Tannat' grape and wine composition, by achieving vine balance. We evaluated a new grape-growing paradigm for Uruguayan conditions that include unpredictable periods of water deficit or excess in nonirrigated vineyards and eliminates competition from cover crops. We used undertrellis cover crops (UTCC) to limit vine water availability, reduce vine growth rate and final canopy size. However, to avoid excessive vine water stress due to the UTCC competition, irrigation was used during water deficit periods.

ABSTRACT. Citrus is one of the main fruit crops in the world and widely recognized by their organoleptic, nutritional and health-related properties of both fresh fruit and juice. The genetic diversity among the genus and the autonomous and independent changes in peel and pulp, make the definition of standard maturity indexes of fruit quality difficult. Commercial maturity indexes in the citrus industry are usually based on peel coloration, percentage of juice, soluble solids/acidity ratio but their relevance may differ among varieties and the specific requirements of the markets.

Abstract. Acca sellowiana, known as 'Guayabo del País' or 'Pineapple guava', is a small evergreen ornamental fruit tree of the family Myrtaceae, native to Uruguay and south-eastern Brazil. It has excellent agronomical and commercial potential, high nutritional value, and is adequate for fresh consumption as well as for the elaboration of manufactured products. Several genotypes with outstanding fruit size and flavor have been selected in the breeding program for this species in Uruguay.

RESUMO. Uma avestruz-do-pescoço-vermelho, com dois anos de idade, apresentava um nódulo no terço médio do esôfago e foi submetida a procedimento cirúrgico. Histologicamente, observou-se uma área focalmente extensa de necrose estendendo-se da túnica mucosa à muscular, e, em algumas secções, à túnica adventícia. Circundando a área de necrose, observou-se uma reação inflamatória composta principalmente por granulócitos e macrófagos, associada à fibroplasia e neovascularização.
