Effect of summer supplementation on animal performance and carccass qualitytrait of grazing Hereford teers in Uruguay. [Poster].

The development and implementation of specialized feeding and managing strategies aiming to optimize beef production efficiency leads to production increases especially through a decrease in slaughter age. Both national and international research have proven that summer annual forage crops, grazing sorghum, along with agriculture by-products and/or concentrates supplementation, is a particularly convenient technique to lift summer production and efficiency restrictions in Uruguay.

Pre-slaughter procedures are considered critical forcattle because the animals are exposed to stressful situations as fear, hunger, increased physical activity that may negatively affect meat quality.

The third Uruguay an National Beef Quality Audit (UNBQA)washeldin 2013 following a 5 years period. It was conducted in a cooperative project among Colorado State University, INAC e INIA. NBQAs helps the Uruguay an beef industry to evaluate the beef quality progress and provide each five years a benchmark to identify carcass and beef qualty attributes that could be improved through animal and carcass management. Basedonthem, education, training and research programs are developed.
