Hot topic: Use of genomic recursions in single-step genomic best linear unbiased predictor (BLUP) with a large number of genotypes.

ABSTRACT. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of genomic selection in single-step genomic BLUP (ssGBLUP) when the inverse of the genomic relationship matrix (G) is derived by the "algorithm for proven and young animals" (APY). This algorithm implements genomic recursions on a subset of "proven" animals. Only a relationship matrix for animals treated as "proven" needs to be inverted, and the extra costs of adding animals treated as "young" are linear. Analyses involved 10,102,702 final scores on 6,930,618 Holstein cows.

To test whether a nutritional supplement fed from 6 days before until 15 days after insemination reduces progesterone concentrations and increases embryo losses, Merino ewes were artificially inseminated (Day 0). Control ewes (n¼116) were not supplemented whereas Lupin6 ewes (n¼112) were supplemented with 500 g lupin grain daily for 6 days before insemination, and Lupin6þ15 ewes (n¼122) from 6 days before until 15 days after insemination. There were no major differences between treatment groups in progesterone concentrations over the first 17 days of pregnancy.

ABSTRACT. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of near infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy to determine oil content in whole corn (Zea mays L.) samples sourced from a breeding program. Kernel samples were analysed in reflectance in the VIS and NIR regions (400-2500nm) at 2nm intervals using a scanning monochromator. Samples were scanned in a circular cell cup and reflectance data were stored as logarithm of the reciprocal reflectance (log1/R). Samples were not rotated when spectra collection was made.

Fruit shading enhances peel color, carotenes accumulation and chromoplast differentiation in red grapefruit.

ABSTRACT. The distinctive color of red grapefruits is due to lycopene, an unusual carotene in citrus. It has been observed that red ?Star Ruby? (SR) grapefruits grown inside the tree canopy develop a more intense red coloration than those exposed to higher light intensities. To investigate the effect of light on SR peel pigmentation, fruit were bagged or exposed to normal photoperiodic conditions, and changes in carotenoids, expression of carotenoid biosynthetic genes and plastid ultrastructure in the peel were analyzed.

Resistance to chilling injury in red, lycopene-accumulating tissue of cold-stored Grapefruits. (Conference paper).

ABSTRACT Grapefruits are widely recognized by their extreme sensitivity to develop chilling injury (CI) during postharvest storage at low temperature. Moreover, many cultivars and mutants of grapefruits exhibit important differences in both external and internal coloration, from yellow to deep red, due to a distinctive accumulation of the red carotene lycopene. Thus, in this study the genetic variability in external peel coloration of grapefruits has been used to examine the potential relationship between carotenoid content and composition, and susceptibility to CI.

ABSTRACT. The allelopathic nature of adult Parthenium hysterophorus L. (parthenium weed) plants, suppressing the growth and development of its near neighbours, has been implicated in its success as an important invader around the world. This study for the first time, evaluates the allelopathic potential of parthenium weed seedlings, species using the ?plant box? method (10). Results showed a species-specific response, often with the growth of native species being more affected than introduced speciesand root growth more affected than shoot growth.

ABSTRACT. The purpose of this study was to examine accuracy of genomic selection via single-step genomic BLUP (ssGBLUP) when the direct inverse of the genomic relationship matrix (G) is replaced by an approximation of G1 based on recursions for young genotyped animals conditioned on a subset of proven animals, termed algorithm for proven and young animals (APY). With the efficient implementation, this algorithm has a cubic cost with proven animals and linear with young animals. Ten duplicate data sets mimicking a dairy cattle population were simulated.

Accuracy of estimated breeding values with genomic information on males, females, or both: An example on broiler chicken.

ABSTRACT. Background: As more and more genotypes become available, accuracy of genomic evaluations can potentially increase. However, the impact of genotype data on accuracy depends on the structure of the genotyped cohort. For populations such as dairy cattle, the greatest benefit has come from genotyping sires with high accuracy, whereas the benefit due to adding genotypes from cows was smaller. In broiler chicken breeding programs, males have less progeny than dairy bulls, females have more progeny than dairy cows, and most production traits are recorded for both sexes.
