Application of near infrared reflectance spectroscopy for the analysis of organic C, total N and pH in soils of Uruguay.

Near infrared (NIR) reflectance spectroscopy was used to analyse samples (n = 332) from different soils from Uruguay (South America) for organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (N) and pH. One set (n = 200) of samples randomly selected was used to develop the NIR calibrations while the remaining (n = 132) samples were used as the validation set. The samples were scanned in a small circular cup in reflectance mode (400?2500 nm), using a Foss NIRSystems 6500 (Silver Spring, MD, USA).
Attraction of males of the South American tortricid moth Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera:Tortricidae) to the components of the synthetic sexual pheromone in persimmon.

Characterization and enantiomeric distribution of some terpenes in the essential oil of a Uruguayan biotype of Salvia sclarea L.

Abstract. A biotype of clary sage (Salvia sclarea L.) growing in Uruguay was evaluated for its suitability to be cultivated in Uruguay. Essential oils from the inflorescences and leaves of plant harvested at full flowering and early seed ripeness stages were obtained by steam distillation and characterized by GC and GC-MS (quadrupole). Twenty-seven components (91-98% of the total composition) were identified.
Bovine abortion caused by Coxiella burnetii :report of a cluster of cases in Uruguay and review of the literature.

Abstract: A cluster of 4 bovine abortions caused by Coxiella burnetii occurred in a dairy herd in Uruguay during a 2-mo period. Case 1 consisted of a placenta from an aborted cow; cases 2?4 were fetuses and their placentas. Grossly, the placenta from one aborted cow had moderate, diffuse reddening of the cotyledons and loss of translucency of the intercotyledonary areas. No gross lesions were observed in the other 3 placentas. Microscopically, 2 of 4 placentas had fibrinonecrotizing placentitis with abundant intratrophoblastic gram-negative coccobacilli. C.

Characterization of the microbial resistome in conventional and "raised without antibiotics" beef and dairy production systems.

Metagenomic investigations have the potential to provide unprecedented insights into microbial ecologies, such as those relating to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We characterized the microbial resistome in livestock operations raising cattle conventionally (CONV) or without antibiotic exposures (RWA) using shotgun metagenomics. Samples of feces, wastewater from catchment basins, and soil where wastewater was applied were collected from CONV and RWA feedlot and dairy farms.
Grass to legume facilitation in saline-sodic steppes:influence of vegetation seasonality and root symbionts.

Abstract:Aim Identify key factors driving legume seedlings performance in saline-sodic soils. Methods Five plots were established in paired subhumid steppes with saline-sodic soils dominated by Distichlis spicata or Panicum coloratum. In each plot, Lotus tenuis was sown in autumn and individual plants were collected close to nurse plants (dominant species), and in open areas, at the end of the cold and warm seasons.
