ABSTRACT. The manipulation of ploidy is a helpful tool in improving crops and grasses. Trifolium polymorphum (Poir.) (Leguminosae) is a native perennial stoloniferous winter species that combines different types of reproductive systems. This biological advantage makes T. polymorphum a remarkable issue of research. T. polymorphum belongs to the Campos region and has evolved into adapted ecotypes through long exposure to environmental stresses, grazing and by competing with the native C3 and C4 grasses which have dominated the Campos vegetation over a long period of time.

Influence of age and planting density on the energy content of Eucalyptus benthamii, Eucalyptus dunnii and Eucalyptus grandis planted in Uruguay.

According to some studies, the use of forest biomass for the generation of electric power and/or heat would result in a significant reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases. This would happen even in the case of soils substitution that currently have an agricultural use although its implementation would require more studies on the environmental impact that they could have in each particular case. In this study, the potential of electric power production is evaluated with several species of Eucalyptus planted in short rotation forestry systems. Three species were evaluated:E.

15N Fertilizer recovery in different tillage-straw systems on a Vertisol in north-west Mexico.

AbstractTillage and residue retention affect nitrogen (N) dynamics and nutrient losses and therefore nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and crop fertilizer use, however, there is little information about residual fertilizer effects on the subsequent crop. Micro- plots with 15N- labelled urea were established in 2014/2015 on a long- term experi-ment on a Vertisol in north- west Mexico.

ABSTRACT. The genetic relationships among 34 accessions of wild rice from Asia, Africa, America and Australia were analysed using RFLP technique. After southern blotting, DNA digestion pattern was hybridised with a highly repetitive DNA sequence of a retrotransposon from a gypsy family of mobile elements. A dendrogram was constructed from RFLP data in which the species clustered according to their genome designation (CC, BB, BBCC and CCDD genomes). Some species did not appear in the same group, for example, O. eichingeri from Africa and Sri Lanka clustered separately from each other.

The qualitative and quantitative composition of the essential oil from aerial parts of Eupatorium buniifolium Hooker et Arnott (Asteraceae) has been investigated for the first time. The essential oils were obtained by steam distillation of leaves and analysed by GC-MS; 44 components were identified. Monoterpene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, especially α-pinene (14.7%), β-elemene (12.2%), germacrene D (11.5%), trans-β-guaiene (6.5%) and (E)-caryophyllene (4.3%), were the major constituents found in the oils. The characterisation of E.

Impact of nutritional stress on the honeybee colony health.

Abstract:Honeybees Apis mellifera are important pollinators of wild plants and commercial crops. For more than a decade, high percentages of honeybee colony losses have been reported worldwide. Nutritional stress due to habitat depletion, infection by diferent pests and pathogens and pesticide exposure has been proposed as the major causes. In this study we analyzed how nutritional stress afects colony strength and health.

Agroecology environment quality quotient (AEQ), an indicator of both, the beehive fitness and the contamination level of the environment by pesticides

Abstract:Three years pesticide residues monitoring data in pollen, wax, bees and honey from sentinel apiaries in different agroecosystems in Uruguay were used for meta analysis. Support vector machines (SVM) algorithm was used previously to classify environments and is the basis of the present work. An useful indicator was developed to classify the contamination status of both beehives and associated environment. The index is a quotient between hive simple demographic parameters and the sum of toxic units for each pesticide found in it.

Antibiotic resistance of Staphylococcus aureus associated with subclinical and clinical mastitis in Uruguay during an eight-year period.

ABSTRACT. Records of in vitro susceptibility tests performed between 2008 and 2015 were retrospectively reviewed in order to evaluate the dynamic profiles of possible changes in antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from milk samples of cows with subclinical mastitis from 12 different Uruguayan Provinces. The results of 1,631 isolates tested by disk diffusion technique for susceptibility to penicillin and erythromycin were analysed.

Abstract View references (4) Background:Standard molecular biological methods involve the analysis of gene expression in living organisms under diverse environmental and developmental conditions. One of the most direct approaches to quantify gene expression is the isolation of RNA. Most techniques used to quantify gene expression require the isolation of RNA, usually from a large number of samples.
